The Hidden Job Market in Australia's Tech Scene

The Hidden Job Market in Australia's Tech Scene

Most roles are filled before you see them

Walk into any tech company in Sydney or Melbourne and ask a hiring manager how they found their last three hires. Chances are, at least one came through a referral or a direct approach — not a job board.

This isn't some conspiracy. It's practical. Hiring is expensive and time-consuming. If a trusted employee says "I know someone perfect for this," the manager will take that meeting before writing a job description.

What this means for your job search

If you're only looking at advertised roles, you're seeing a fraction of what's available. The rest lives in conversations, Slack channels, and casual coffees.

Three ways to tap into the hidden market

  • Be visible. Share what you're working on. Write about problems you've solved. People can't refer you if they don't know what you do.
  • Stay connected. Keep in touch with former colleagues. A quick check-in every few months keeps you top of mind.
  • Ask directly. "Do you know of any teams hiring for X?" is a perfectly reasonable question to ask someone in your network.

The Australian context

Australia's tech market is smaller and more relationship-driven than the US. That works in your favour if you invest in connections. The community is tight — people remember who helped them, and they pay it forward.
